Background To explore differences in personal and home environmental factors that are regarded as determinants of energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs) according to parental education and ethnic background among 10–12 year old schoolchildren across Europe. Methods A school-based survey among 10–12 year olds was conducted in eight countries across Europe. International audience; This paper aims to compare the educational outcomes of children of immigrants in France and in the US to understand the educational inequalities and opportunities for social mobility for the second generation in both countries. The comparison is focused on children from two groups: North Africans in France and Mexicans in the US. By using two longitudinal datasets, the French Educational Panel Survey and Add Health, we examine aspirations, expectations and attainment in secondary education in the two contexts. The increase in filio-parental violence over the last few years is reflected in the number of complaints regarding the data provided by government agencies and media, because of the increase in society’s interest for this issue. This study deals with the influence of different parental educational styles on the origin and continuity of these behaviours, through interviews with professionals from the social field and discussion groups with parents and children.
